Penumbra launches the Element™ Vascular Access System

Penumbra, an innovative vascular interventional company, announced the official launch of the Element™ Vascular Access System. This is a laser-cut hypotube catheter sheath specifically designed for the interventional treatment of venous thromboembolism (VTE). With the advent of this system, Penumbra states that its VTE treatment platform has achieved a closed loop, providing a complete solution from access to thrombectomy.

Synergistic Empowerment: Seamless Compatibility with the Lightning Flash 2.0 System. The Element system is primarily designed to work in conjunction with the Lightning Flash 2.0 mechanical thrombectomy system to efficiently remove venous thrombi and treat pulmonary embolism (PE). The core advantage of this system lies in its ability to work synergistically with the thrombectomy catheter.

In an interview, Professor Raj Kakarla, an interventional radiology specialist at Javon Bea Hospital in Rockford, Illinois, stated, “The Lightning Flash 2.0 catheter’s excellent flexibility and torque transmission, combined with the stable support provided by the Element catheter sheath, enabled us to achieve excellent intraoperative imaging results and clinical success rates. Penumbra’s continued innovation provides clinicians with a more comprehensive portfolio of products, enabling us to address a wider range of patients and ultimately improve patient outcomes.”

Core Technology Analysis: Balancing Hemostasis and Maneuverability

According to officially disclosed technical details, the Element system integrates several innovative designs for complex venous interventional procedures: 1. HemoLock™ Dual-Valve Hemostasis System: This system employs a dual-valve engineering design, comprising a rotary hemostatic valve and a detachable cruciate valve. This combination is designed to ensure superior hemostasis during surgery, providing the surgeon with precise control and effectively reducing intraoperative blood loss.

2. Laser-cut sheath design: Unlike traditional braided sheaths, Element employs laser-cut sheath technology, achieving gradient support while ensuring extremely thin sheath walls. Its proximal design provides robust base support, and the smooth transition of the polymer gradient maintains the sheath access without the need for a proximal hydrophilic coating.

3. 17F Max ID Technology: The Element sheath is specifically optimized for the CAT16 catheter in the Lightning Flash 2.0 system, employing 17F large-diameter technology. This design accommodates the CAT16 catheter while providing sufficient clearance for manual injection of angiography, and ensures adequate rotation and torque space for the CAT16 catheter within the sheath.

4. Atraumatic Distal Tip and Passability: Its atraumatic distal tip design significantly improves the compliance and tracking ability of the catheter sheath in complex vascular anatomy, reducing the risk of vascular injury.

Summary:

The introduction of the Element system signifies that Penumbra has achieved full-process coverage in the field of VTE intervention, from access construction to mechanical thrombectomy. For vascular surgeons, this highly integrated and compatible system is expected to further simplify surgical procedures, shorten operation time, and provide more stable access support for interventional strategies for managing highly burdened organized thrombi.
